Acquire the Fire: Hot Surgery

We're already on the third week of our Acquire the Fire sermon series through Colossians chapter two. Today's sermon title is Hot Surgery...don't worry...this is a safe place...you won't be "cut open" this morning!

The "Hot Surgery" refers specifically to Colossians 2:11 "In Him you were also circumcised, in the putting off of the sinful nature, not with a circumcision done by the hands of men but with the circumcision done by Christ."

Obviously the operation noted above is an operation only God can perform. This is not a physical operation; it is a spiritual operation, for Paul tells us it is not "done by the hands of men". It is an operation of the heart.

The Bible has much to say about the heart. In Proverbs 4:23 Solomon pens, "Above all else, guard your heart, for it is the wellspring of life." In the book of Proverbs the word "heart" refers to the center of one's inner life and orientation to God. It is from the heart where one does all thinking, feeling, and choosing. Based on such truth, the heart is worth guarding because out of the heart flow all the thoughts and words and choices of a person's life.

It's a risk to expose your heart. Very few people are secure enough to "put their heart on the table" but some actually take the plunge. I'm reminded of Billy Joel and his fast and furious relationship with Elle MacPherson in the early 80's. Joel claimed to love Elle but knew the relationship wouldn't last because they were complete opposites. But in spite of the risk, Joel decided to expose "his heart" to Elle. This can be captured in Joel's classic song And So It Goes which he wrote as a response to his relationship with Elle. A sampling of the lyrics reads:

So I would choose to be with you
That's if the choice were mine to make
But you can make decisions too
And you can have this heart to break

I don't recommend you share your heart with just anyone; we should make protecting our heart a top priority. But, I do recommend you "take the plunge" and give your heart to God. Unlike Billy Joel, or Elle or any other human, Jesus Christ will never let us down; He will never forsake the man, woman or child who is melted toward Him. After all, wasn't it Jesus Christ's heart that broke for us on the Cross? Trust Jesus today and give Him your heart!

On the Victory Side,

Dave
