A preacher was exhorting his congregation with exuberant invitation, "Come, my children. Get your sins washed away." In the midst of this exhortation, a member of the congregation spoke up, "I already have, over at my mother's church of a different denomination." "Brother Jones," came the stern reply, "you ain't been washed, you just been dry cleaned!"
No one can read the New Testament without being aware of the fact that baptism held a very important place in the life and practice for the early church. However, what was once a source of unity among Christians has become a further cause of division and disunity, amidst a bewildering diversity of practices and beliefs. Some churches sprinkle, others pour and still others immerse. There are Christians who believe that no one will get into heaven who is not baptized, while others believe that baptism itself is the means of regeneration, and others see baptism as a symbol.
To cut through this diversity of claims and counter-claims is not a simple matter. However, the study of the biblical doctrine of baptism is simplified by the recognition that involves the asking and answering of four questions:
Lord willing, today's message will not only inform you but also inspire you to either be baptized or appreciate, all the more, your baptism from the past.
